I am a professional mining engineer, with an MBA in Finance and background in mining operations and management consulting. This is the best high level view of the industry I've come across.Given my background, I find this handbook offers simple treatment of most concepts. But this is exactly what I want and expect from a single-volume financial-operational overview of mining. For example, I can get a summary of ore processing and refining for major base and precious metals (an item with which I'm less familiar), and look to a more expansive reference on gold processing where I find I need more information.This is a good reference for experienced geoscientists, and an excellent guide for finance professionals or people more removed from operations.

Great book. As someone with a postgraduate finance education this provided the necessary insight required for valuing companies involved with mining, and to a lesser extent (but not by much) oil & gas. Some people with no experience with finance might wish to choose a supplementary book to enhance their understanding of capital structures, project financing, to understand why/how NPV is used (he does explain it to an appropriate level I believe, but not to a level of detail that you could go away and proclaim "I know finance stuff!").Very comprehensive as it covers the those parts necessary to determine NPV, along with a brief hypothetical case study near the end to tie it all together, which I felt was a great way to structure the book. Some other books try to integrate a case study as you read through the parts of a book, I find this annoying having to flick through various parts of the book to find the relevant parts for the case study, this book puts it all in one place at the end.Second to the valuation aspect is the introductory nature of understanding the geological "variables" one must be aware of when reviewing companies. I especially found the basic information of geology coupled with life cycles of a mining company, from explorer through to producer, to provide a concise reference.I don't work in the investment industry, but I brought this book for my own personal investment purposes.

The first edition was excellent and filled a real gap in the market. I bought quite a few of them to give to my employees over the years. This fourth edition really does not add much - it continues to use a lot of the old material.

Probably ok for investment bankers who are economic with the truth when it comes to operating a mine, but I didn't get value out of this book, the early chapters are very basic and totally biased to the Australian mining industry. I found indicative capital and operating costs very indicative and of little use.A lot of mistakes perhaps printing errors,

I was very disappointed with this handbook -- it was too basic and did not have enough value to justify its excessive $85 price. Returned it to Amazon for a refund...

I thought this book was great value for the price . Around 600-700 pages of content covering the basics of most minerals and hydrocarbons plus business valuation with share price expectations all the way from exploration to production .

About the Author

Bilal M. Ayyub is a professor of civil and environmental engineering and the director of the Center for Technology and Systems Management in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, where he has been since 1983. He is a leading authority in risk analysis, uncertainty modeling, decision analysis, and systems engineering. Dr. Ayyub earned degrees from Kuwait University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a fellow of the ASCE, the ASME, and the SNAME, and a senior member of the IEEE. Dr. Ayyub has served on many national committees and investigation boards and completed numerous research and development projects for governmental and private entities, including the National Science Foundation; the U.S. Air Force, Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, Navy, and Department of Homeland Security; and insurance and engineering firms. He has received multiple ASNE Jimmie Hamilton Awards for best papers in the Naval Engineers Journal, the ASCE Outstanding Research-Oriented Paper in the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management, the ASCE Edmund Friedman Award, the ASCE Walter Huber Research Prize, the K.S. Fu Award of NAFIPS, and the Department of the Army Public Service Award. Dr. Ayyub is the author/co-author of more than 550 publications in journals, conference proceedings, and reports, as well as 20 books, including Uncertainty Modeling and Analysis for Engineers and Scientists; Risk Analysis in Engineering and Economics; Elicitation of Expert Opinions for Uncertainty and Risks; Probability, Statistics and Reliability for Engineers and Scientists, Second Edition; and Numerical Methods for Engineers.

Richard H. McCuen is the Ben Dyer Professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Maryland. Dr. McCuen earned degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. His primary research interests are statistical hydrology and stormwater management. He has received the Icko Iben Award from the American Water Resource Association and was co-recipient of the Outstanding Research Award from the ASCE Water Resources, Planning and Management Division. He is the author/co-author of over 250 professional papers and 21 books, including Fundamentals of Civil Engineering: An Introduction to the ASCE Body of Knowledge; Modeling Hydrologic Change; Hydrologic Analysis and Design, Third Edition; The Elements of Academic Research; Estimating Debris Volumes for Flood Control; and Dynamic Communication for Engineers.

Fracture mechanics has established itself as an important discipline of growing interest to those working to assess the safety, reliability and service life of engineering structures and materials. In order to calculate the loading situation at cracks and defects, nowadays numerical techniques like finite element method (FEM) have become indispensable tools for a broad range of applications. The present monograph provides an introduction to the essential concepts of fracture mechanics, its main goal being to procure the special techniques for FEM analysis of crack problems, which have to date only been mastered by experts. About the Author

After studying physics at the University of Magdeburg, Prof. Dr. Meinhard Kuna worked as researcher and group leader at the Academy of Sciences of GDR (Institute of Solid State Physics and Electron Microscopy) in Halle. At the university of Halle he graduated with PhD Thesis (1978) and habilitation (1991) in the field of numerical methods in fracture mechanics. After German reunification, he became head of department at Fraunhofer institute for Mechanics of Materials Freiburg/Halle and later at MPA Stuttgart. Since 1997 he is full Professor for Applied Mechanics and Solid Mechanics at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
Prof. Kuna established an internationally recognized research group dealing with computational methods in fracture mechanics, damage mechanics and modelling of materials. His projects are devoted both to fundamental research and industrial applications, ranging from nuclear waste casks, piezoelectric materials to microelectronic devices.

Prof. Kuna published about 240 papers and one monograph. He organized several national and international scientific conferences on fracture mechanics and is member of Editorial Boards in international journals.
