About the Author

Jonathan Samuels (also known by the name Sherab Gyatso) spent 20 years as a monk, living in Tibetan communities in Asia. He is one of a handful of foreigners to have been awarded the title Geshe, having completed a full course of traditional academic studies in Tibetan monastic institutions. He has many years experience teaching Tibetan, and has both designed and taught training courses for translators and interpreters. Jonathan Samuels holds a Masters degree from the Oriental Institute of the University of Oxford, and is currently completing his PhD with the same institution. He currently holds the position of Research Fellow (Buddhist Studies) at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University.

Studying topics such as consumerism {and I live in a UK town that's all retail and sales no manufacture}, exploitation and even racism. Tansy tackles head-on such important issues within an industry that is given rise to so many misconceptions and glossy façade's with such passion and depth of emotion that you cannot help but feel enthused and touched. The beautiful, specially commissioned illustrations that adorn the pages add another layer of brilliance to this fantastic book.I found this book inspiring as well as heartbreaking and was affected by so many different emotions; from rage to eagerness in finding our more and learning more. This is not an easy subject to broach and yet the author has written such a notable literary work as to be highly acclaimed and greatly valued. I envisage mixed views on this!3.5 stars

Gear cutting on the lathe' is mainly intended for clock makers but will also be of interest model makers. It was written as a companion th 'The Penman long case movement' for the simple reason that gears are needed in the movement and it was possible that clock makers intending to make the movement might have no experience of making either wheels or pinions

About the Author
Laurie Penman is an internationally recognised author and clock maker who came to clock making after twenty years in engineering design and management. He lives in Worcestershire with his wife - and is quite a long way from their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gear Cutting on the Lathe is intended to enable the clock maker to design and make the gears needed in a clock movement. That alone is not a lot of help without information on tool making, machine tool practice and techniques, all of which appear in this book.
