"I'm a computer programmer," Kaplan writes. "I'm that dude at your office in the dark cubicle who nobody listens or pays attention to (especially the hotties in marketing)." Kaplan's claim to fame is FuckedCompany.com, a Web site he built over Memorial Day weekend in 2000 to serve as a forum for bad news about Internet companies. His timing a few months after the Internet bubble began to deflate was perfect, and FuckedCompany became an immediate hit. Thousands of fired or about-to-be-fired dot-commers were more than willing to share their horror stories about the collapse of one Internet company after another. He has translated the material posted on the site into a book, offering brief vignettes of the demise of more than 150 Internet ventures. His basic formula includes a description of what the company purported to do (Mercata.com "customers would use the site to band together and purchase merchandise at wholesale prices"), how much money it blew through before going bankrupt and how many people were fired ("$89 million and 100 employees were burned"). Kaplan, 25, attempts to enliven each story with humor, which is often more crude than clever. That many of the stories sound the same is not Kaplan's fault, as most really are: someone comes up with an idea, finds a venture capitalist willing to pour funding into the company despite the flimsiest of business plans, and then goes broke when the money dries up. Although he tries, Kaplan delivers little more than an elegy for the Industry Standard, Pets.com, Contentville.com, Flooz.com, Bid.com and Kozmo.com, not to mention Zing.com, ProcessTree.com and MetalSpectrum.com.

The site began as a joke but was chosen as "Site of the Year" by Yahoo! Internet Life in 2000 and as one of the year's best by Time. Kaplan, now the president of an e-commerce solutions firm, here chronicles the rise and rapid fall of numerous dot-coms. Written in an informal style and sprinkled with salty language, his book explains why each company was formed and why it was doomed to failure. At Pets.Com, for instance, pet owners could order food and supplies; "then I'll watch the dog starve and the cat shit all over the house while I wait for it to be delivered!" Several other dot-coms were fined because they failed to deliver items by the holidays as promised. Included in the sources section are web sites that the author consulted; future editions would do well to include a bibliography of articles and books for further reading. About the Author

John Plamenatz (1912-1975) was a Montenegrin political philosopher, who succeeded Isaiah Berlin as Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory at Oxford. The best-known of his many books on the political thought is Man and Society: A Critical Examination of Some Important Social and Political Theories from Machiavelli to Marx (1963).



Mark Philp is Fellow and Tutor in Politics of Oriel College, and has been a Lecturer in Politics at Oxford University since 1983. From 2000-2005 he was Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University. He is the author of Political Conduct (Harvard University Press, 2007) and Thomas Paine (OUP, 2007).


Fellow and Tutor in Politics is an emeritus fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford University. He has worked widely across the history of political thought and contemporary political theory.

Portraiture is a demanding art requiring the artist to capture a likeness and render it revealing some hint of the personality behind the image. A two-pronged task, it requires great technical skill and an intuitive eye. In both these respects, John Singer Sargent stands out as a portrait artist of major stature.Born in 1856 in Florence of American parents, Sargent showed artistic aptitude at an early age and was enrolled at the Academia delle Belle Arti in that city. Later he studied with Parisian artist Carolus Duran, acquiring the loose, painterly style for which he is renowned. International acclaim as a portrait artist came early in his life and followed him throughout his career.Sargent's portraits done in oil are well known; they appear in major museums throughout the world. A lesser-known but no less respected aspect of his oeuvre, his portrait drawings are the focus of this collection. Included here are early works in pencil and pastels, and later renderings in charcoal, a medium Sargent favored after 1910. They have been selected from both public and private collections by art historian Trevor J. Fairbrother and attest to Sargent's technical skill, versatility, and dexterity in three different mediums.In addition, these works reveal Sargent's ability to treat a diverse group of subjects; he handles the languorous beauties of the Edwardian age, members of the aristocracy, and the great literary and artistic figures of his day with equal virtuosity, capturing their characteristic mood and style.  Well, this is my first complaint about an Amazon purchase. The book came just this morning, and it's pretty crunched. Came in a bubble envelope, but no stiffener was used so it was "antiqued" on its way to me.Amazon should have known better. It's a thin book, paperback, with stapled binding - it clearly was not going to survive the shipment unscathed. Still, it's usable for my purposes (trying to learn to draw) so a beater copy will do. Really unusual for Amazon though. Most everything I get from them is wrapped well enough to be air dropped.The good news: nice drawings! See the video.

As a student of Life Drawing and Portraiture (Carolyn's by Design) going back to her art, I had to have more of Sargent. I had just read the book, "Strapless" about the nortorious Madame X who was captured over and over again in Sargent's renderings. This compilation of renderings displays how attuned Sargent is with his representations of the personalities, how good his eye is at capturing the likeness.....how easily he appears to use minimal usage of his medium to obtain maximum expression in his subject.....This small Dover Art Library reference to Sargent gives you the medium and size as well as the name of the subject and the Intro gives you a great synopsis on Sargent's bio.....For any serious student of Sargent....you will refer back to this over and over again for technical knowledge as well as the inspirational beauty obtained from his work...I love him! Formerly millersequine....sign me Carolyn's by Design and "Enjoy"!!!

A good book full of great drawings by one of the best artist I have ever studied. The price is right and you should not waist one more minute before you order it.I always like to see how the great artist draw, since drawing is the back bone to good painting in my mind.I really get a kick out of artist who say they can't draw and can only paint, sure.. Thats like saying you never learned to walk and that you can only run.Sargent used to say you should draw every day and I think he was right.

Wonderful book with amazing drawings.

Great selection of Sargent's best drawings, but there is no contrast in the reproduction photos of the drawings--they are gray and washed out.

Nice Dover book with some primo drawingss by master portraitist J S Sargent. Good size and solid reproductions for a nice little price. Can't beatr price, around 5 bucks, less than ordering directly from Dover.

the printing quality isn't that good. and they didn't choose his masterpiece portraits they went for the normal ones. I recommend buying this book duo to the low price.

This book of 42 works has been one of my favorites. I have practiced the portraits over and over and enjoyed them each and every time. I am a big fan of JSS. His works are inspiring for a would be artist such as myself.
